The Breath

I'll start of this post with a quote from Yogi Bhajan:

"If there is anything Divine in you, its the breath"

I've been teaching Kundalini Yoga for 3 years & practicing for 7, yet I still catch myself shallow breathing and when this happens, I instantly take a Long deep breath and bring my focus back to conscious breathing

Here's a few principles to remind ourselves to breath consciously (Pranayam)

Incoming breath of life is PRANA
Outcoming breath is APANA

Your rate of breathing and your state of mind are inseparable
The slower your rate of breathing, the more control you have over your mind.
The mind follows the breath and the body follows the mind

One of the best Pranayams to begin slowing down the mind is Long Deep Breathing.

To begin:

Sit up straight with legs crossed (Sukh Asan) or 'easy-pose'. Your hands can be resting on your knees or in 'Gyan Mudra', forefinger and thumb tips pressed together. The other three fingers are straight or you can lie on your back. keep your arms by your side. Palms facing up and begin inhaling and exhaling as deeply as possible threw the nose in either of these positions.
focus your attention on the inhale and exhale.
Inhale deeply threw the nose, relax the abdomen ( you may also push out the abdomen(navel point) to create this effect). Feel as though you are pulling your breath down into the navel center. The breath than begins to fill the abdomen expanding like a balloon as it does, fills the lungs expanding the diaphragm the ribs and opening the chest. Keep inhaling till you have filled the lungs to capacity, than begin to exhale, emptying the lungs from top to bottom. Pulling the navel point in slightly on the exhale. Expelling the breath out completely. Breath deep as you follow the breath out.
Begin the process again. Slowly inhaling deeply & exhaling commpletely.

Inhale feeling energized revitalized & strong
Exhale releasing toxins, fear & doubt

Continue for 3 minutes to start
When you are finished, notice any changes you feel. Has your breathing slowed down? do you feel calmer? Are your thoughts clearer?
Practice as often and as long as you like.

Long Deep Breathing has the ability to:

Strengthen the nervous system
Purify the bloodstream
energize,Increase vitality
Relax & calm you
Reduce insecurity & fear
Release block in meridian flow
Pump spinal fluid to the brain
Restores the aura

The list can go on & on
It is suggested to do this meditation for 3 mins, eleven mins 31 mins or more
3 mins to start is good!

This was cool! I'm walking on this deserted beach in the British Virgin Islands when I find this abandoned bar with all these conch shells lying around every where. It was so beautiful & mysterious. I ended up staying there for a while thinking about how this bar could have been sustained when it was open. There was no direct path leading to it, just a hugh rocky back-drop behind it which I came down sliding and grabbing on to weeds as I went. Going back up I was trying to find a quicker detour that wasn't so steep. After doing this I had toback track my steps because I ended up in peoples back yards which included barking dogs & tall fences.

Now I ask you seriously: How could a drunk person navigate that?

Kundalini Yoga

Teaching yoga is a great way to elevate the soul!!!
Practicing yoga has defiantly given me the solid foundation I had been seeking unconsciously threw most of my life!
A daily commitment to myself and a community of souls coming together to reach a common goal!
A path based on self initiation.
7 Years ago and 1 month into recovery while living in a house filled with other newly clean people I went to my first Kundalini yoga class and my life began to transform from that moment on because of the change I felt as I began to breath differently. Move my body differently while chanting along with angelic melodies. It was like a dream at times. Especially during deep relaxation. When I left these early classes I felt light. I 'felt' being the key word....I felt something pleasant within myself created by a positive, safe experience. A drug free state of 'ease' a little 'peace of mind'

This was a good thing.

Opening up the space

This past 7 years truly has been a path of self discovery. Seven years ago I choose to begin the process of finding the person within myself that I liked. The part of me that I would like to be friends with and get to know. Seven years ago I finally quit drugs and stopped living a very messy life of living in constant fear and self loathing. I ended the devastating cycle of chronic addiction to heroin & cocaine. I have not used drugs since!!! Ya me. This was a milestone!

Little did I know at the time that the journey to 'heal thy self' would be far more challenging and at times even more painful than any drug induced situation I was involved in could invoke

Center myself

'It is my intent to center myself in my congruent vehicles.'

'It is my intent NOT to center myself in my congruent vehicles'

These are the phrases that I'm using today as I become more & more aware of all the 'vehicles' which represent me as I live my life at this time.
By 'vehicles' I mean My energy systems, meridians, chakras everything within my magnetic field and physical body which affects my well-being.
It is my intent to bring all these pieces together to create a space of consistency & compatibility within myself. Allowing me to feel safe, grounded & centered.

If you read this post and the mantra resonates with you, try both sentences. At first the second line with the word 'not' in it worked better for me. Similar to reverse psychology my resistance to allow compatibility took this option. It worked anyways. As I became comfortable with how these words effected me, I began using the first sentence

When I feel I'm being affected by my surroundings other peoples energy fields or my own numerous distractions I can tell myself with intent to center myself in my congruent vehicles.

It works!

Welcome to Iyashi's path!
