The Eagle totem

In Indian teachings, the eagle is the principal messenger of the creator. The eagle flies closest to God just as the principalities do. Our creator flies out of our sight just as and eagle does, but he can always see and hear us. The eagle sits on the east side of the medicine wheel with the elders. The east is the direction where wisdom and guidance reign. The eagles teaching ironically enough is to learn that you cannot always rely on intellectual solutions all the time. You should never rule out your heart. The key is to balance your intelligence and emotions.
The eagle connects the spiritual to the earth plane for the eagle possesses powerful courage. His feathers are tools for healing from negative forces. The feathers heal by teaching us that our path is to learn how to combine wisdom and courage, the courage to change in life that is.
American Indians believed that trees are the medicine people of the plant kingdom. Trees are rooted warriors and are inhabited by the elementals. Trees symbolize the transformation of the universe.

The eagle sits and guards on a great white pine tree. The white pine is the foundation of the ancient wisdom that helps us to put the pieces back together that got shattered by life’s experiences. By piecing our life’s back together, our minds will elevate and re-member once again to find our balance in thought and emotion.
It is the Haudenosaunee people of the great league of peace whose wisdom I speak of. These tribes were part of this league: Mohawk, Onandaga, Oneida, Seneca, Cayuga and Tuscarura. These tribes searched for the roots of this great tree. The roots represent the past and honor our ancestral heritage. The roots stem in four directions symbolizing peace and strength. The trunk of the tree stands for our present time and reveals the life force and the creative spirit with in the branches. The branches represent our desired future goals in life. If the tree grows fruit or flowering buds, our goals will be obtained.
